Scott Adams once said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” Is this the way art is created or an idea is generated? I think there are a thousand ways to generate an idea and a thousand ways to convert that idea into an expression, which finally becomes what we call art. So, to start with, where does this idea come from? Simple answer to this would be from our past experience and associations. It’s our mind that plays around all the time with our emotions, reactions, memories, learning, experience and knowledge, and allows us to make connections to arbitrary belongings felt by our senses. So, basically different rudiments in our brain collect and combine to instigate an idea. Idealization, execution and production done by the artist are to build that idea in a concept, which is the final outcome or art. Great art is a series of small things brought together consciously. It is just an expression to what one feels and what one can do. It could be unconscious, but while ideating it becomes subconscious and as soon as we express that idea it is totally conscious.
Our inspirations for art are mostly the famous artists that we have talked about since our childhood. How was their life? How were they able to make what they made? What was their inspiration? What was their daily routine? If we look at all famous painters we see, there life was filled with tragedy or most of them were in depression. I don’t know if these are rumors or this is the way every artist live, that is, in isolation. Or maybe they wanted to be famous, as people gather when there is pain and not where there is joy. Pain creates associations very easily, which leaves a greater impact on us. But henry miller quotes, “an artist is always alone- if he is an artist. No, what the artist needs is loneliness.” Does artist needs to be alone to become great in life? If yes, then how is he able to associate with the rest of the world? Everything can be inspirational for an artist. Initially it might come from their idols, teachers and peers, as Pablo Picasso quotes, “good artist steal, but great artist copy”. But once they have achieved the craftsmanship, it comes from a sense of humanity. Inner psychological state and self-awareness inspires the artistic creation. The art created through this practice is mostly self-centered which comes from people, places and experiences that directly affect the artist. Other ways of motivation are usually from the areas concerning the society, world and spirituality. However, past events, feeling and thoughts build the knowledge they idealize with. So even if the artist is isolated at all times, he is filled with pieces of his past dreams and aspirations, which he uses to make art. Moreover, this environment that he chooses to live in allows him to go deep into the thoughts with no competition or restrictions from the society, which is pure.
So, what is an ideal artistic process? Elizabeth Gilbert once mentioned that the idea, which many people are trying to figure out, is flowing in the space around them. But it’s for us to catch it and write it down somewhere. Its up to us to get hold of the idea’s tail and pull it back towards us. According to me, Art and design is all about education based on information and experience, where imagination is our resource to ideate. To develop creative thoughts we need to see the bigger picture and apply our knowledge and experience to develop multiple solutions, make decisions disobeying the rules, believe in our senses, explore values, understand cultural change, engage with meanings of life, increase self confidence, recognize differences, improve well being and work with constrains of a certain medium. To do that the easiest way is to carry a sketchbook everywhere with you and critically evaluate every word you write in that. Broadly categorizing, there are two types of artistic processes- One, we have the idea and we express it through a certain medium and two, when we ideate an already existing expression, that is, we give a meaning to the subconscious expression consciously.
Art is when someone touches with their inner self and communicates that information through an abstract. It communicates both individual and universal experiences that all people share. My research proposes that these days, artists are the one aware of their role in the society and are able to express about “what is life” whereas on the other hand, designers are the people who are technically trained and do the same. However, this thin line broadens when legitimacy comes into place. From the time of post structuralism, the fact that the artist wants us to know has many truths. There is no single truth and the art is read in any way the author wants to. Therefore, art is not linear but multi-dimensional. It is important for the artist to realize what impact he is leaving on the audience. For example; the advertisements, they are only convincing facts, which need not be true but are projected in a way that audience believes it. The evidence is the outcome that is shown to the audience, which is manipulated. This is similar to art. The artist conveys what he wants the audience to know. It is as clear as possible but the outcome depends on the audience.
An exclusive painting is what we search for, but what we get these days is a copy of the same. Therefore, no painting remains exclusive (only one) in the world. This is because of a medium we often ignore, which is mass production. So whom should we acknowledge for the painting? If you take into account the example of Jackson Pollock, he used to replicate his own paintings. Then which of the paintings is exclusive? If we say, we ideate because of our past, then how many people should we acknowledge? In the process, I can call everyone “the artist” because of whom the person painting got his inspiration from to the person himself. But only the audience decides this authorship at every point of an artistic process. These are the things that we often don’t consider but becomes an essential part of this discussion.
